DJ Biography: DJ Swagg
By: Marques the Writer
Johnny Gregory, better known to the music world as, DJ Swagg is a very passionate and skilled DJ from Augusta, GA who has been pursuing music professionally since 2008. He's also an active member of: Coast2coast DJs, LiquidFire DJs, and BurdSkool DJs.
DJ Swagg became familiar with the art of DJing while in the Marine Corps. The U.S veteran spent time in Japan, Iraq, Italy and various cities across the states; where he had the opportunity to learn and master the craft while doing promotions during downtime. He was stationed in Jacksonville, NC for eight years where he became a bouncer after his first Iraq tour and got his first break as a DJ.
The former bouncer was known for having an unusually large collection of good music in his personal collection, so DJ’s would often ask for the newest and hottest songs coming from the South. After DJ Lickumlow (who he did security for) was gunned down on Christmas day 2007; the other DJ’s encouraged him to become a DJ.
As a child, DJ Swagg was raised in the church and has always been around music. He was a tenor in the choir; however boredom spawned him to transition into playing the drums. He admits that James Brown and his grandfather, who sang with The Georgia Jubilee Choir, have been very influential to him also.
Some of his other influences include DJ's: Funk Master Flex, Jazzy Jeff, KiKi (Augusta, GA), Kaoss, Jamm, Blaq (Jacksonville, NC), Natty (Miami, FL)
DJ Swagg hosts a popular online radio station, Underground Augusta Radio, which plays 24/7 Indie Hip-Hop & RnB. He also releases at least one mixtape per quarterly with the Coast2Coast DJ’s and is working on a few Liquid Fire Empire independent artist mixtapes, Pyro Junkies Mixtape Series, RiseNGrind Mixtape Series, an upcoming mixtape series with BurdSkool DJs and several mixtapes by established independent artists across the Georgia/South Carolina area.
