Welcome to Alma Ave., a place seemingly transported from a cutting-edge Al C. Clark suspense novel, where two characters have begun to ascend from the grit with grind. Hailing from Buffalo, NY, a city most known for its crime and poverty, arise lyrical storytellers Charles “Diesel” Newkirk & Joevere “Good Writtens” Alexander; two musical visionaries who form one of Hip-Hop’s most prolific duos of the modern era, known as Alma Ave. Raised on the same block, they draw both their name and inspiration. The seemingly inseparable
Alma Ave. garners a childhood friendship whose affiliation more resembles biological brothers than friends. Bonded by their lust for wealth and limelight, the streets became an easy socket to energize their lofty yearnings for success. “The hustle is how we grew, and all we ever knew,” exclaims Diesel as he describes the conditions for survival in Buffalo’s upper eastside where their neighboring homes were nestled.
Growing up with a band of brothers and cousins, they were exposed to the game and the rules within. Writtens’ home, scarred by the effects of drugs, saw several family members struggle with addiction at an early age. “Being one voice among five brothers makes it a hard place to be heard, so I started writing for therapy and grinding to survive.” explains Writtens. After the untimely incarceration of Diesel’s older brother, affectionately known as “Buss”, and Diesel’s own clashes with BPD, the friends decided to pay less attention to their desire for fast money, and devote themselves to finding a way out. “We’ve always believed in our artistic abilities but, when the
rent is due and the kids need clothes, the ends justified the means.” Writtens voices as he reflects on his choices. “Being a voice for the hustlers who chose either the streets or a 9 to 5 as source of salvation, we’re confident that our stories of loyalty, struggle, sacrifice and triumph will resonate not just in our hood but, hoods across the globe.” says Diesel.
So, the journey begins. From their recent collaborations with hip-hop royalty, Freeway and Memphis Bleek formerly of the Roc-A-Fella Dynasty and their latest tour with Joell Ortiz of Slaughterhouse, Alma Ave. has begun ringing bells in the industry. Forming their own record label, Stil’a Hustle Records and procuring distribution by way of west coast based Empire Distribution, Alma Ave. is set to release their first full length project entitled “Welcome to the Ave”. The group describes the 90s hip hop influenced project as, “...just a small yet relevant glimpse into our lives.” This is only the beginning of the resurgence of the New York hip-hop duo; Alma Ave. is at the forefront. Put Jay-Z & Nas in a blender with a dash of Biggie, Pac & Gentleman's Jack on ice... Alma Ave is what you get.
